Keg Sizes Explained: 5L, 20L, 30L or 50L — Which Barrel for Your Party?

5, 20, 30 or 50 litres — beer kegs in Spain come in more sizes than most people expect, and picking the wrong one is either a sad, early-empty barrel or a lot of flat leftover beer. Here’s the practical guide we give our customers in Mallorca.

The four common keg sizes

Size Glasses (0.25L) Needs a tap system? Best for
5L party keg ~20 No — built-in tap BBQ, small dinner, fridge-friendly
20L keg ~80 Yes Birthday at the finca, ~20 guests
30L keg ~120 Yes The classic party size — best price per litre
50L keg ~200 Yes Weddings, big events — heavy (~60 kg full!)

Which one should you pick?

  • Under 10 guests: stick to 5L party kegs or bottles and cans — no equipment needed.
  • 20–40 guests: one or two 30L kegs plus a rented tap system is the sweet spot. One tap line pours one beer variety — for two varieties you need a 2-line system.
  • 50+ guests: combine 30L/50L kegs — and remember a full 50L keg weighs around 60 kg. Ours arrive on a hand truck, carried by someone who does this every day.

Keep it cold — the Mallorca factor

A keg standing in the August sun is undrinkable within the hour. The rental tap systems we deliver use dry cooling — the beer is chilled on its way through the line (up to 55 litres per hour), so the keg itself doesn’t need a fridge. Keep it in the shade, and you’re fine.

What it costs

Kegs are priced per barrel plus a refundable deposit — see the current selection of Spanish and German kegs. A tap system with cooling and CO₂ rents from 121 €: everything on our beer tap & keg rental page, including FAQ and glass rental.
